$E$-OPTIMAL BLOCK AND ROW-COLUMN DESIGNS WITH UNEQUAL NUMBER OF REPLICATES

SUMMARY. It is well known that in experimental settings where v treatments are being tested in b blocks of size k, a balanced incomplete block design and a group divisible design having parameters l 2 = l 1 +1 is E-optimal among all possible competing designs. In this paper, we show that under certain conditions, the E-optimal designs mentioned in the previous sentence can be used to construct E-optimal block and row-column designs with unequal replicates to handle experimental situations in which heterogeneity is to be eliminated in either one or two directions.
