SUMMARY. The problem of optimum allocation of samples for partitioning a set of normal populations by their locations with respect to a control is studied using the indifference zone approach. A proof of a conjecture in Tamhane (1987) is presented. As some results in this paper disagree with the corresponding in Tamhane's paper, new versions of tables for the calculation of sample sizes are presented.
