STANDARD ERRORS FOR LOW INCOME PROPORTIONS ESTIMATED FROM STRATIFIED MULTI-STAGE SAMPLES

SUMMARY. Estimates of proportions of " low income" economic families from stratified surveys are often required in studies of income shares or wealth distributions. Two such estimators are considered here, one based on the estimated proportion below half the estimated median family income and the other on the estimated proportion below a low income cut off defined as the solution of a regression equation. Asymptotic distributions of these estimators are obtained. Variance estimators based on the method of balanced repeated replication (BRR) and the delta method are also considered, and their consistency is established. Results of a limited simulation study on the finite-sample performance of the BRR variance estimators and associated confidence intervals are also reported.
