CONDITIONS FOR RANK CORRELATION TO BE ZERO

SUMMARY. Given two rankings of n objects, necessary and sufficient conditions are derived in this paper relating to the value of n for it to be possible for the correlation between the two rankings to be zero. This correlation is measured, in turn, by each of three different coefficients, namely Spearman’s ‘foot-rule’ coefficient, the general product moment correlation coefficient (normally known as Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient), and Kendall’s rank correlation coefficient.
