SUMMARY. An alternative estimator of the finite population variance is suggested and is compared with Liu's and Chaudhury's estimators empirically with the help of variety of natural and artificial populations. It is seen that the proposed alternative estimator appears to be more efficient for most of the populations under consideration and is also found to take negative values less frequently than the Liu's estimator.
