The Determination and Construction of Optimally Sequenced Fractional Factorial Block Designs

SUMMARY. Jacroux (2006) suggested an optimality criterion for sequencing two-level $2^{m-k}$ fractional factorial designs that are blocked in $2^p$ blocks of size $2^{m-k-p}$. This criterion essentially was to sequence blocks so that main effects become estimable  as early and as efficiently as possible in the sequencing process. Using computer search methods, Jacroux (2006) also obtains optimal sequencing plans for most of the designs published in Sun, Wu and Chen (1997). In this paper, we extend the criterion for optimal sequencing of individual blocked $2^{m-k}$ designs to that of selecting an optimal design and sequencing plan over all available designs for given values of $m, k,$ and $p$. A systematic means for identifying and constructing designs which are either optimal or close to being optimal under the criterion suggested is also developed.
